Have fun with family and friends at QMU’s Community Open Day

By Press Office

Drumming workshops, tandem bikes, children’s outdoor games, book giveaways, a bouncy castle, free bike checks and campus tours will all be on offer for local residents at Â鶹MV’s annual community open day.

The event, on Saturday 31st May, is a chance for the local East Lothian and Edinburgh community to enjoy the campus buildings and grounds, view the facilities, and relax and have fun.

With a family-friendly focus, the event will provide the opportunity for children to take part in outdoor learning games and for individuals and families to explore the University’s Outdoor Learning Hub and Discovery Trail. With the help of partner organisations, fun learning activities such as den building, bug hunting, tree and bird identification and nature craft, will help to ensure there is plenty to entertain younger members of the family. There will also be a food truck to supply hot food and snacks throughout the event.

The event also gives people the chance to explore what the University has to offer in terms of room space, conference facilities, the Sports and Fitness Centre and Maggie’s Bar and Café.

Lynn Barclay, Commercial Manager at QMU, said: "It is important that the University is a real asset to our local community, so we want to provide residents with the opportunity to experience the University facilities and gain an idea as to what is available to them.

“We have a fabulous range of spaces for hire, including small meeting rooms, our piano bar space, an attractive conference suite - right up to larger rooms and lecture spaces, which can accommodate up to 250 people. We can organise and host both large and small events - ranging from intimate gatherings for local groups and small meetings for businesses, right up to corporate dinners and international conferences.”

“With light and airy rooms which have open views across the landscaped gardens, we can also offer the perfect place for family and group celebrations, with rooms which look over our pond and decking area.”

Lynn continued: “The University’s Students’ Union bar and café, Maggie’s, is very popular with local residents and we are delighted to welcome individuals, groups, families, children and VIPs (very important pooches) for breakfast rolls, lunches, coffees or full meals throughout the year. And we love seeing out students and staff mixing with the local residents, and enjoying the sun, at our picnic tables on University Square.

“We also welcome walkers to enjoy our attractive gardens and we welcome visitors to stroll in our grounds and make use of our Outdoor Learning Hub and Discovery Trail.”

QMU’s Community Open Day will run on Saturday 31st May ‘25 from 12noon – 3pm. Entry to the event is free.
